Lessons from NEXT2012 in Romania

I often see folks blogging about what they learned, were inspired by, or impressed them about attending an event. it is far less often when I see a headliner, or promoted presenter blog about the lessons they learned or what inspired or impressed them after the event. I've often wondered why that is.

For me, it has a lot to do with needing to quickly shift gears upon completing an event to catch-up on all the things that I put off to prepare for the event, figure out what immediate stuff landed in my inbox while I was ignoring it, and to follow-up on leads, lessons, inspirations and curiosities from the event itself.

Well, I'm going to make a concerted effort to do better about posting my lessons from events, starting with NEXT2012, hosted by SoftVision, held in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, Oct. 26-27
So, what were my take-aways from NEXT2012?

  • I'm *really* excited about how I'm now organizing and packaging my performance-related materials (more on that in a separate post).
  • SoftVision did a fantastic job organizing and handling logistics.
  • I am seriously impressed with the people I interacted with on both a professional and technical level.
  • Those same people are social, collaborative, friendly and are able to enjoy their work and create enjoyable work environments while being professionally and technically impressive.
  • Romania (as well as several surrounding areas not widely considered "software/technical powerhouses") is an emerging market worth watching.

On the Alleged Death of Testing

Out of respect for your time, I'll give you the bottom line up front as a simulated interview that I privately hoped for, but never came. After the mock interview is a supporting narrative for those of you more interested in my thinking on the matter.

Q: There's been a lot of talk recently about testing being dead, so my first question is testing dead?
A: No.

Q: Some of those talking about the alleged death of testing are saying that it's not that testing as a whole is dead, but that testing as it is commonly understood today dead. Is it?
A: No.

Q: Ok, so is testing as it is commonly understood today dying?
A: Not that I can see.

Q: Then why all the talk about testing "as we know it" being dead?
A: IMHO? Wishful thinking.

Agile backlash series...

From SearchSoftwareQuality.com:

Agile backlash series: Exploring Agile development problems and solutions

I think Jan Stafford did a great job on this series.  I don't agree with every opinion from everyone interviewed, but I wouldn't expect to.  I think it's fair, honest, insightful, and (best of all) focuses on experiences, challenges, and ideas about overcoming challenges instead of theory, marketing fluff, and excessive exaggeration.  :)

Of course, I'm always happy when someone is willing to publish quotes of mine like the following excerpts from Why Agile should not marginalize software testers:

"SSQ: You come in frequently to integrate testing into Agile development. What kind of problems do you see organizations having when integrating testing?

Scott Barber: The first thing that I hear about is, ‘What do we need testers for if we’re doing Agile? Isn’t everyone in Agile a generalist?’

Testing the Limits... Interviews by uTest

uTest is doing a series of interviews with interesting/well-known testers. I was flattered to be asked to be interviewed recently and found that I enjoyed answering the questions... and didn't hate my answers when I read them as posted (any of you who have ever done that sort of thing know that is a fairly significant statement!)

My interview is "Testing the Limits with Scott Barber": Part I, Part II, Part III

Other folks interviewed include James Bach, Jon Bach, Michael Bolton, Matt Heusser, and Rosie Sherry. If you've got the time, I think they are worth the read.

Five Questions with Jon Bach, by the Braidy Tester

I met Jon about 3 years ago. It was a funny story, actually. I was at STAREast talking with a bunch of folks at the bar after the last presentation of the day. Some guy came over and introduced himself to the person sitting next to me.

I heard his name and I stopped, mid-word, stood up excitedly, started shaking his hand and talking a mile-a- minute...

(Scott) "OhMyGod! Jon Bach! I'mSoExcitedToMeetYou! IReadYourBookAnd... I'm sorry, my name is Scott Barber, I've done some work with your brother..."
(Jon) "Wait! JamesToldMeAboutYou! You'reThePerformanceGuy! IRunATestingLabInSeattleAnd... How about we sit at the bar, I'll buy you a beer."

Jon has been one of my best friends ever since. Oh yeah, he's also one of the best testers and teachers of testers I've ever met. If you don't know Jon -- or even if you do -- Michael Hunter posted Five Questions With Jon Bach today. Take a look, it's a good read.

Choosing Performance Testing with Scott Barber (Stickyminds interview reprint)

A Word with the Wise:
Choosing Performance Testing with Scott Barber
by Joseph McAllister

Every kid eventually puts some thought into the question "What do you want to be when you grow up?" For PerfTestPlus CTO Scott Barber, who specializes in context-driven performance testing and analysis for distributed multi-user systems, the answer was not "performance tester." He planned to follow in the footsteps of his father, an industrial arts teacher, and sought an ROTC-scholarship-funded degree in civil engineering. In his junior year of college, though, Scott learned that his first years with the Army Corps of Engineers would involve digging foxholes for infantry rather than building bridges with the Seabees.

"I decided that if I was going to be crossing the front lines, I'd much rather be carrying heavy weaponry than heavy shovels," he says.
